Researching Dance

To begin your research go to the Richland College Library homepage.  On the web page you will see a green button for databases near the top half of the page.  Click on that link and if you are are using a computer off campus you will be taken to a page which asks for your name and student id number.  Fill in the form and you will then gain access to the databases/electronic resources and the library catalog. Resources for all of the Dallas County Community College District Libraries are in the catalog and can be limited by campus (RL is Richland).

Contact a librarian if you need assistance.

Richland College Writing Center

This dance appreciation course is reading and writing intensive so if you need assistance with your assignment, please visit the Richland College Writing Center.  The Writing Center is part of the Center for Tutoring and Learning Connections and it provides free one-on-one tutoring to students currently enrolled at Richland College who want assistance with their writing.

Most common types of citations used in Dance Appreciation

Video Viewed on YouTube.Com

Unlike printed sources which provide the reader with publication information your Web source may contain only sound and images with little documentation.  So you may need to improvise in citing your material.  It is important to be consistent in your formatting.  Also Web sites and resources may not always be available so you should consider downloading or printing the material you use when doing your research so that you can verify it if it is inaccessible later.

Refer to Section 5.6.1  "Citing Web Publications".   MLA handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 7th ed.  New York : Modern Language Association of America, 2009. Print.

In the example below from YouTube there is no author.

 In Works Cited:

The Best of Dance in America.  Perf.  James Ferguson. HB Publishing, 2009. YouTube.Com. Web. 6 Oct. 2010.

In-Text Citation:

Because there is no author in the example above, the title for the in-text citation is shortened to the first word in the title. There are no page numbers to refer to in a web video. As in print citations you do not include articles like "The" and "A"  as a first word.

 (Best).
